April 16th, 2014

Securing an impressive record of three wins from only five race starts to date, Shamalia claimed back-to-back victories in her two debut runs, and while unable to match the late pace when fifth in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m), returned to the winner’s circle in the Listed Fireball Stakes (1100m) last time out.

Fourth amongst classy company in the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) last time out, the Shamardal filly will leave from the ideal barrier 2 and will be partnered by veteran and regular jockey Glyn Schofield.

Also included in the final field for the 2014 Royal Sovereign Stakes is talented three-year-old Thump.

Securing a record of three wins and three places from only thirteen race starts to date, Thump has returned to the track in reasonable form this season; overcoming a forgettable run for seventh in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) first-up and reversing her fortunes with a comfortable win in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) on March 8th.

While blocked for a run and eighth in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) last time out, trainer Kris Lees is confident a return to Group 2 is the right move for the Red Ransom filly this weekend, who will leave from the central barrier 7.

While allocated the wide barrier 12 for the 2014 Royal Sovereign Stakes, New Zealand raider Bounding will be offered good chance of securing victory in her maiden Australian appearance, having returned to the track in top form this preparation.

Yet to finish worse than second in ten race starts which have included seven wins, Bounding was unlucky to finish second behind Costa Viva in the Group 1 1000 Guineas (1600m) on November 13th, the Lonhro filly secured a maiden victory at the highest level of racing in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1200m) on January 1st.

Continuing her impressive form through to the Group 3 Mr Tiz Trophy (1200m) last time out, Bounding will be partnered by regular jockey Mark Du Plessis who has been confirmed to make the trip across the ditch this weekend.

Trainer Peter Snowden will be offered twice the chance of securing success in the 2014 Royal Sovereign Stakes, having accepted positions in the final field for talented stable mates Sidestep and Safeguard.

Allocated the ideal barrier 5 for this weekend’s Group 2, Sidestep has returned to the track in strong condition this time in, finishing second behind Shamalia in the Listed Fireball Stakes first-up before poking a nose clear to win the Listed Darby Munro Open (1200m) most recently.

Confirmed to be partnered by in-form jockey Kerrin McEvoy, Snowden is particularly confident of Sidestep’s chances this weekend.

Contesting three wins and two places from only eight starts to date, Safeguard will have to overcome the slightly awkward barrier 10 if to claim her first-up appearance this preparation on Saturday.
