The Royal Randwick Racecourse was host to an impressive upset in the running of the 2010 Royal Sovereign Stakes on Saturday.
Clear favourite in the lead up to the Group 2 race over 1,200 metres was the Gai Waterhouse-trained Manhattan Rain. The colt finished in a shocking fifth spot after rearing at the get-go and never making up for lost ground.
Flying under the radar coming into the race was the ultimate winner Shoot Out.
Flying under the radar coming into the race was the ultimate winner Shoot Out. The John Wallace-trained gelding won the 2010 Royal Sovereign Stakes after having to go to a finishing photo and beat More Than Great by a nose.
The ultimate goal for Shoot Out this season looks to be the Group 1 AJC Australian Derby (2400m) on the 10th of April.
Waterhouse’s other starter in the race, Viking Legend, came in the third spot.
Demerit who had drawn the inside barrier, looked like a favourite for the 2010 Royal Sovereign Stakes, however was scratched from the event.
