2010 Royal Sovereign Stakes Nominations

February 8th, 2010

The Royal Randwick Racecourse is gearing up to hold the Challenge Stakes Day on Saturday and one of the feature events will be the running of the 2010 Royal Sovereign Stakes.

The Group 2 race sees some of the elite three-year-old colts and geldings sprinting over 1,200 metres to get a share in the $150,000 purse, and this year, the line-up seems as though it is certainly one to impress.

Gai Waterhouse’s Manhattan Rain is raising eyebrows in the lead up to the 2010 Royal Sovereign Stakes. The Cox Plate runner up has had some strong recent runs and will be a certain favourite for the race.

Fellow Waterhouse-trained horse Viking Legend is another strong contender. The colt came in third spot at the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) and will put on a good show at Saturday’s event.

Demerit, winner of the Caulfield Guineas Prelude, is another colt to keep an eye on. The Peter Snowden-trained horse will certainly be in with a chance.

Shoot Out, trained by John Wallace, is using the 2010 Royal Sovereign Stakes as a stepping stone to the Group 1 AJC Australian Derby (2400m) so will be hoping to put in an impressive run.

The 2010 Royal Sovereign Stakes will be the second of eight races held at the Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday, with the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m), and the Group 3 Breeders Classic (1200m) other notable races on the Challenge Stakes Day.
